Are you unfamiliar with architectural housing styles and would like to learn more? Learning about the architecture of a home can be an interesting and fun new experience. Let's expose you to some of the various housing styles and find out about some architectural influences.
When North America was originally colonized, the settlers brought with them building traditions from several different countries around the world. The architecture from this colonial period still influences the houses that are built today in Leesburg, Virginia.
A little information on New England Colonial Houses (1600 to 1740's)
In the late 1500s and early 1600s, when the first group of settlers came to America, the houses in England had massive chimneys, steep roofs, and details of the home that had survived since Medieval times. The Colonists continued to build using this design throughout the 1600s and well into the 1700s in other areas. Since all of these homes were constructed with wood, very few of the original New England Colonial homes are still standing today.
About Spanish Colonial Houses (1600 to 1900)
Originally Settling in Florida, the American Southwest, and California, settlers from Mexico and Spain built these homes with features that typically had flat roofs or a low pitched roof. They were generally single story homes with thatch, earth, or clay tile roofs. These Spanish Colonial houses had thick walls that were made with adobe brick, rocks, or coquina coated with stucco. They had many exterior doors and were designed with small windows without glass. Instead, the windows had wrought iron bars or were made of wood with interior shutters.
A tidbit about Dutch Colonial Houses (1625 to mid 1800's)
Beginning in America in New York State, Dutch Colonial homes were of brick or stone construction. The upper and lower halves of the doors to these homes could be opened independently. This is where the term "Dutch door" was formed. They generally had matching chimneys on either side of the house, and had wide, slightly flared eaves. They have Gambrel roofs or Gambrel roofs with flared eaves.
These are only a few examples of the various architectural styles you will find when buying a home in Leesburg, VA. This is a very interesting aspect of the United States, as there were so many various settlers from all over the world building the "American dream".
